Hooray for go-with-the-flow couples and oh-so-sweet-puppies! I’m so excited to feature BOTH of Derek and Katie’s engagement sessions on the blog!
So, I include complimentary engagement photos with wedding packages for two reasons:
- To help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera before their wedding day.
- So I can get to know couples better before capturing one of the most important days of their lives.
What did I learn about Derek and Katie? They’re super laid back, aren’t afraid to get a little wet, and are very passionate people!
Derek & Katie ended up with TWO engagement sessions!
I check the weather like a crazy woman on days I have sessions. I mean, I’m constantly hitting refresh on my Weather Channel app. I did this all day leading up to Derek and Katie’s session, and things looked sunny and beautiful. But, when I went to put my gear in my car, I was shocked to see storm clouds coming in.
I called Katie and asked what she wanted to do. “We can either brave it or reschedule,” I told her.
Without missing a beat, Katie replied, “We aren’t afraid to get a little wet. Let’s try!”
From Katie’s attitude alone, I knew I was going to love this session and couple! So, I met Derek, Katie, and Bella (Derek’s sweet pup) for their engagement photos at the Celery Bog in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The wind was blowing, and a little rain was spitting, but Derek and Katie still rocked their engagement photos! We got about 45 minutes into their 90-minute session when it really started to rain and we lost all of our light due to the rain clouds. So, we ran back to our cars and scheduled part two of their engagement session.
To be honest, I was a little glad that Katie and Derek’s session got rained on because it meant that I got to see Derek and Katie again! Derek, Katie, and I met a few weeks later for engagement photos at the Celery Bog. Coming back to the same location with this adorable couple in the same outfits felt like deja vu, but I was more than happy to relive their session!

Derek & Katie’s passions will be part of their big day.
Katie and Derek booked their wedding with me about a year ago, and over the last year, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about what they love.
For example, Derek is a fireman. This plays a huge role in his life, and some of his very best friends are on his crew. A photo with all of his firefighter buddies will definitely be on the agenda for his wedding day!
In the meantime, Katie is an ag teacher and her school’s FFA sponsor. She loves her job and her students so much so that she’s including some of her students in her wedding! They will wear FFA attire and serve as ushers. Katie is clearly a wonderful teacher and beloved by her pupils!
Katie also makes custom wooden bouquets as a side hustle. For her own wedding, she wanted to make wooden bouquets and arrangements. She got to work, and friends and family saw the beautiful flowers she was creating and started placing orders! Now, Katie is the owner and florist for her own company, Barnwood Blossoms.
