A goal-oriented couple who were clearly made for one another? Perfect fall weather? The most stunning formal outfits and the coziest fall sweaters? Everything about John Underwood and Sarah Crews’ downtown Indianapolis engagement photos were a dream, and I’m so excited to share just a handful of my favorite photos from their session on the blog!
A few years ago, John was supposed to be enjoying a golf outing. However, due to the rain, the outing was delayed, so John and some friends posted up in the golf course bar.
And, this is when John noticed the bartender, Sarah.
Some of John’s friends were regulars at this particular course, and as a result, Sarah was already a good friend of theirs. So, as Sarah made drinks, she chatted with the group and only added to the fun they were having.
While the group hung out and waited for the rain to clear, a friend’s mom noticed John noticing Sarah, and she encouraged John to ask for Sarah’s number. So, John walked up to the bar and did exactly that.
While John thought he’d get Sarah’s number and ask her to go to dinner or something in the next couple weeks, John and Sarah ended up spending the rest of the day together. You see, when John went up to the bar, Sarah’s shift was ending, and their mutual friends told Sarah she should stick around for a drink and to play a few holes. So, she did.
John and Sarah spent the rest of the afternoon chatting and playing golf. And, they started officially dating just shortly after the rainy golf outing.
Now, one thing to note about both John and Sarah is that they both work incredibly hard and live fast-paced lives. While Sarah is type A and John is more easy going, both are very goal oriented. And, I think it’s safe to say that John and Sarah are such a great match because they can keep up with one another while also pushing and cheering for each other.
About three years after they met, John and Sarah were certainly talking about marriage. I mean, they were a perfect match, Charlotte (their beloved pup) had been added to their family, and their families were both clearly ecstatic about the pair and all John and Sarah were doing and accomplishing both together and as individuals.
Sarah knew that the proposal could come at any time—perhaps on a vacation or trip because John and Sarah travel quite a bit. But, she began to get suspicious when John and Sarah’s families decided to get together one weekend and then again when John made dinner reservations for the two of them—which is something Sarah typically does in their relationship.
While Sarah thought John might propose at dinner or in front of their families, John still managed to surprise a suspicious Sarah by proposing the day before the family get together during a hike at Lemon Lake.
Sarah was—of course—elated that her best friend asked her to be his wife!
While they had dinner reservations and couldn’t wait to celebrate with their families the next day, they did have a little time to kill. So, in typical Sarah fashion, Sarah more or less said, “One of my girls has a game down the road? Can we stop by?”
You see, in addition to being a physical therapist, Sarah offers private softball pitching and hitting coaching. And, as the committed coach Sarah is, she knew one of her athletes had a game nearby that Sarah didn’t want to miss.
John agreed to go, and if you know John and Sarah, you know that an engagement weekend that included quality time together, hiking, softball, and time with their families was absolutely perfect for them.
While John and Sarah live in northern Indiana and will get married at the gorgeous Lighthouse in Cedar Lake in October 2023, they decided—for a change of pace—to take downtown Indianapolis engagement photos. And, guys, I’m so glad they did!
Wanting both some formal photos and some more fall-inspired photos, we started John and Sarah’s session in their formal outfits at the Indiana World War Memorial in downtown Indy. And, guys. Just wait until you see these two!
Between just who they are as people; Sarah’s perfect dress, hair, and makeup; and John’s flawless suit, John and Sarah arrived to their engagement session ready to GO! I mean, we even moved on to some advanced posing very quickly. Not that engagement photos are a competition, but if they were, John and Sarah would certainly have whatever the highest score is!
After their formal photos, we traveled a few blocks west to take some more fall-inspired downtown Indianapolis engagement photos in White River State Park. (John and Sarah, thanks for being willing to make the hike! Without parking nearby, I know it was a long haul!)
Now, while so many people assume that the leaves will be the most colorful in October, in Indiana, the first week of November tends to have the best trees. And, I’m so glad John and Sarah took my word for it. I mean, just wait until you see these two looking flawless among the leaves and then the twinkle lights on the canal!
John and Sarah, I was looking forward to your wedding before. But, after your downtown Indianapolis engagement photos, I cannot wait for your big day or to get the two of you (plus Charlotte) in front of the camera again!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for trusting me to be your wedding photographer. I hope you love your downtown Indianapolis engagement photos and that the next year flies by so that your wedding day will be here before we know it!
I still can’t get over John and Sarah’s perfect engagement photo outfits! I mean, their formal outfits were just so classic and timeless! Like I mentioned before, we took John and Sarah’s engagement photos in early November. And, believe it or not, the first week of November tends to be when the leaves are the most colorful. I mean, between the leaves and John and Sarah’s outfits, isn’t this just fall perfection?!
